Nurturing the “U” in Youth Development

There was a time when I wanted to change the world! I mean I still want to impact the world, however, trying to change the youth (and adults!) is for sure an uphill battle.

It’s already hard enough to change my bad patterns and improve myself. Besides who likes a nagger or someone preaching to you all the time? Not I. And nag I have and can, ask my husband!

Starting this blog has been a gateway to articulating a message of inspiration and motivation, rather than, “you should do this, that, and the 3rd.”

So here is my proposal to us today:

What if our lifestyle supports us first, in order to give to others out of a full cup?

Plants have tons of benefits for us humans. Plants that lack some water, sunlight, love, and good soil are at risk of dying, and therefore, no longer serving us.

So my proposal is not a spa day, or “you do you,” a night out, or any of society’s terms of self-care. I’m talking about the long-term nurturing that happens a little bit at a time.

And it can happen at your dining room table, kitchen table, living room, backyard, balcony, car, office, etc.

It’s about the little things that add up in the long run. As a society, we have forgotten about harvesting. You plant the seeds the season before the harvest comes. I know it’s tempting to expect the results of our labor right away.

So what am I exactly talking about here? I’m talking about daily reflection, and time alone to nurture what matters the most - you.

I’m talking about taking some time for you, and you alone.

I’m talking about taking the time to experience the magic of pen to paper and clearing your mental real estate. And if you’re a thinker and dreamer like me, we have tons of thoughts per minute!

This is your blog about the journey of self-care, and our responsibility to role model life to the full to the next generation. This includes my personal evolution on the topic and self-accountability as well. I learn in the community and I invite you to take this journey together.

Your contribution is important to send a stronger message, especially to those in the field of service because we tend to leave ourselves last.

Below is the Revised PDF I wrote for those in the field of youth development. And in my personal opinion, we’re all in this field. There is someone younger than you who is watching your everyday moves and who is crying for your mentorship.

I would love your feedback from this blog and/or the PDF. What came up for you? What areas/topics do you want to read more about Self-care?

Love,

Me.
