Trip to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania
Do you love trains? Want to experience a cool historic town, yummy restaurants, and a railway that goes along the river? Wondering if your pup can ride with you? Then Jim Thorpe in Pennsylvania is your place to visit.
This blog gives you all the details from our 1-day trip from NYC through beautiful PA. This trip is a 2-hour trip each way. All aboard! Choo choo!
Jim Thorpe has something for every member of the family. Jimmy, Poppy (our puppy), and I got the opportunity to hang out as a family pack. The train has an option for dogs to join in the Open Air Car which is an open window and in my opinion, the best seat in the house.
The Open Air car is $20 per adult, $10 per child, and a complimentary ticket for our furry companions! This is a 70-Minute Round Trip.
The parking on the street is for residents only. You can park in their main parking lot for $12 a day. Be aware that if you go on the weekend, you’ll be taking a mini-hike walking from your car to the station. The thing we loved about it was that they have a path along the river that is well protected from cars.
We also took a short hike to Lehigh Gorge State Park which is along the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. This is a 5-minute drive from the train station. We parked all the way at the end because that is where the bathrooms are. You’ll also find the coolest cave to explore. It’s a short walk and it leads to the river.
After our hike, we decided to drive up W Broadway which is a wonderful drive with the beautiful historic buildings that truly make you feel as if you were in Europe. This town is known as the “Switzerland of America.”
It’s an uphill walk, so we decided to drive and explore first before walking to the restaurant and of course Jimmy’s main reason for going, “Muggles’ Mug Cafe.” They only allow service dogs inside, however, there is outdoor sitting for the family!
Our next stop was testing out a local brewery and we chose Marion Hose Bar which is a newly renovated historic firehouse next to the Opera House. I got a margarita while Jimmy got a Sour Monkey to match his mood.
We ended our day with the most delicious desserts at the Railway station from a local bakery. There were vendors with all sorts of desserts for those leaving the train and/or town.
Overall, this is a town we would like to revisit again in the Fall and stay for the weekend. Below is our video VLOG from our experience at Jim Thorpe, PA.
